OGMA recognizes outstanding architectural glass projects

April 21, 2017 – The Ontario Glass and Metal Association presented its Awards of Excellence to two Ontario companies at the Top Glass trade conference on April 20. TAGG Industries won the award for Excellence in Architectural Glass Execution, and Perkins Plus Will won Excellence in Architectural Glass Design. TAGG won for its work on Google’s Canadian headquarters in Kitchener, Ont., and Perkins Plus Will won for Mohawk College’s David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.
The award was judged by Adrian Phillips and Paul Marcoccia of CS&P Architects. Only OGMA members could nominate winners, but any Ontario architectural glass provider was eligible to win the awards.
About the Google headquarters, the judges said, “The upper storeys of the building consist of multi-faceted curtainwall panels with both inward- and outward-projecting planes that make for a very interesting facade. The execution on both the construction of the pre-glazed curtainwall panels and the installation of these complex units to perfectly come together along common non-planar joint lines is done flawlessly here. The juxtaposition of old and new is dealt with in a very elegant manner where both complement one another and create a stronger whole. This project is a wonderful example of how curtainwall can be manipulated to create complex geometric forms which exude a high level of elegance – this can only be carried off successfully if the execution is of the highest level.”
Regarding the David Braley Centre, they noted, “While a relatively simple execution of curtainwall, the design of this building elegantly uses the curtainwall as the key aesthetic and functional element for the exterior appearance of the building and in creating the feel of the interior space; blending interior and exterior student life by means of its high transparency, mood lighting and media panel. The curtainwall in this project transcends merely being sculptural by having form effectively follow function and vice versa.”
On hand to accept their awards were Phil Fenech, a principal at Perkins Plus Will, and Steve Dulong, CEO of TAGG Industries.
The OGMA is accepting nominations for its 2017 Awards of Excellence, which will be presented at Top Glass on April 19, 2017. Members wishing to nominate an outstanding project should contact Lee Baker at firstname.lastname@example.org.
