OGMA president sounds off on Ontario project cancellations

October 29, 2018  By Patrick Flannery

Angelo Cairo of Stouffville Glass, president of the Ontario Glass and Metal Association, has issued a statement criticizing the recently announced cancellation of funding for several large institutional projects by the Doug Ford PC government in Ontario.

“Just this week the PC government has hit the construction industry with another blow by way of cancelling all important funding to York University Markham Campus, Wilfred Laurier Milton Campus and Ryerson University Brampton Campus, totalling $305 million,” Cairo wrote in an email. “What this government has failed to realize is that when a university, college, high school or even grad school is built, not only does that one project produce hundreds or thousands of jobs during the construction and manufacturing life cycle, but once that building is built there is significant subsequent investment in the area that takes place. These type of investments pay dividends for all the new business and development that spawn from single project like this. I say shame on you, PCs, for being so short-sighted in trying to save a measly $305 million today and not supporting construction and manufacturing and future development.”

The Ontario government announced the funding cancellations on Oct. 23, citing a need to trim Ontario’s $15 billion budget deficit.
