The Glass Association of
North America
and the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance announced today a
free webinar for anyone in the glass and glazing industry.

In a follow-up to
the “Fatalities and Injuries during Flat Glass Handling” webinar of March of
2011, IGMA and GANA are presenting a webinar designed to reduce or prevent
injuries among foreign-born and younger workers handling flat glass. “Reducing
Glass Handling Injuries among Foreign Born and Younger Workers” will review
recent incidents, current regulations and training methods to analyze the
safety of this large segment of workers in the flat glass industry. The webinar
will be presented by Mike Burk of Quanex Building Products. Mike serves as
Chairman of the IGMA Glass Safety Awareness Council.

“The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has released its preliminary Census of
Occupational Fatal Injuries Summary for 2011,” explained Burk. “This BLS summary
reports that fatal injuries among workers in the 20 to 24 age group were up
nearly 18 per cent. Fatal injuries among Hispanic or Latino workers rose from
707 in 2010 to 729 in 2011, an increase of 3 per cent. There were 823 fatal
work injuries involving foreign-born workers in 2011 of which the greatest
share (338 or 41 per cent) were born in Mexico. Many of the manufacturing
workers in our industry are members of these groups.”

Burk has worked in technical service and training in the insulating glass industry
for over twenty years, and has served as a member of the Technical Service
Committee and as chairman of Education Committee of the Insulating Glass
Manufactures Alliance. He holds a Master’s degree in adult leaning and development
from Cleveland State University and a bachelor’s degree in business from Myers
College in Cleveland.

The webinar is scheduled for October 30, 2012 at 1:00 EDT. Registration for the
webinar, which is offered free of charge, is available now at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/712369850.
Anyone in the glass and glazing industry is invited to participate.
