IGMA to hold free safety webinar on Oct. 8

October 3, 2019  By IGMA

Oct. 3, 2019 – IGMA is hosting a free webinar on Tuesday afternoon next week to discuss safety in the industry. The webinar will be led by Mike Burk of Sparklike, the leader of IGMA’s Glass Safety Council. “The Breakout Gang” presentation will discuss:

  • Free Falling Glass / Automated Loading Systems
  • Scrap Handling / Scrap Bins
  • Walking Surfaces / Slips Trips and Falls
  • PPE
  • Handling Large Lites / Multiple Lites
  • Remake requests / Special Glass
  • Pedestrian Traffic
  • Emergency Stops / Light Curtains
  • Storage Racks /Slot Sorting Racks

The glass cutting department can be one of the most dangerous parts of an insulating glass plant. Many lites of glass, both large and small are handled by multiple operators. Rush demands from the assembly department can cause the operators to hurry or cut corners. Disposal of the scrap glass can be difficult to complete safely. The operators can be exposed to lacerations, crushing or being caught in or between glass and equipment.

“Every day in this country,14 workers lose their lives in preventable workplace tragedies. That adds up to 5,000 people who lose their lives on the job every year,” said Burk. “No worker should lose their life for a paycheck.”
