Bystronic and Urban Machinery partner to introduce high speed friction corner welding

July 15, 2008 – Bystronic Solution Centre of Ottawa, Ont., and Urban Machinery, with its North American headquarters in Cambridge, Ont., have partnered to introduce a new high-speed method of sash corner joinery for window and door manufacturers.  

July 15, 2008 – Bystronic Solution Centre of Ottawa, Ont., and UrbanMachinery, with its North American headquarters in Cambridge, Ont., havepartnered to introduce a new high-speed method of sash corner joinery for windowand door manufacturers.  Bystronic’spatented Friction Corner Welding Technology, and the corresponding FrictionCorner Welding equipment developed by Urban, promise dramaticmanufacturing efficiencies in certain applications when compared with currenthot plate or fusion welding technology. 

The base technology utilizes corner webs, which are usedto bridge and bond the profiles together. 

In its final embodiment this process will also integrateglazing and even improve the structural integrity of the welded sash.  Additionally, due to the very short andconcentrated weld cycle, the weld flash created is highly controlled andvirtually non-existent, resulting in the elimination of secondary cleaning equipmentin most cases.  The process alsopromotes a cleaner factory environment and because it is very simple, resultsin extremely consistent product quality.

While the base machine utilizes many of the existingfeatures and components of Urban’s fusion welders, the unique features inUrban’s Friction Corner Welding machine designs are the engineered solutions tothe hurdles of vibration isolation, raw material variance and the realities ofthe ambient conditions present in high volume window and door manufacturingfacilities.  

Beta testing is expected to continue through the summerwith the first production run of this equipment to be available for sale towardthe end of 2008.
