Building guards standard CSA A500 explained at Glass Connections

Glass Connections in Burnaby, B.C., – taking place June 7 and 8 – will feature a presentation by Sergei Mihhailenko and Les Szczepanski explaining the new CSA A500 standard for building guards and its implications for glass balustrade construction in Canada. This standard will soon be referenced by the NBC and provincial building codes. Glass Connections is presented by the Canadian Glass Association.

The CSA just released the “A500-16 Building Guards” standard and if your business includes  the glazing of balustrades, railings, staircases, or other guards (whether indoors or outdoors), compliance will soon be mandatory. This standard specifies requirements for the materials, design, construction, testing, and performance of building guards that act as protective barriers to prevent accidental falls from one level to another, and includes walls that serve this purpose. The new standard brings a number of challenges, hurdles, testing requirements, and submissions that must be done to prove compliance.
