Oshawa glass works to close next year

Dec. 2, 2008 – Pittsburgh Glass Works, formerly PPG/Duplate, is closing its Oshawa
operation and eliminating about 160 jobs in the first quarter of next
year.

year.

The company announced the closure to its workers yesterday after only buying the plant a few short months ago.

Canadian
Auto Workers Local 222 President Chris Buckley said, "My heart aches
for our members and their families affected by today's terrible
announcement.

"This is another devastating blow to workers who rely on the auto industry. It's another negative impact to our community."

The plant traces its roots to early last century and the original name Phillips Glass.

Over the years, the plant has had many different owners such as Duplate, and PPG.

It was also among the first workplaces that formed what was then known as United Auto Workers Local 222 in 1937.
