No strike at Kawneer
The Canadian Auto Workers union (CAW) has ratified an agreement with Kawneer Manufacturing, a division of Alcoa, in Lethbridge, Alta., avoiding a strike.
April 22, 2011 – The Canadian Auto Workers union (CAW) has ratified an
agreement with Kawneer Manufacturing, a division of Alcoa, in
Lethbridge, Alta., avoiding a strike.
CAW Local 99 represents a bargaining unit of 218 Kawneer workers. The workers include
production and maintenance employees at the plant
which operates a press for aluminum extrusion and the production of
architectural products.
CAW members at Kawneer held a vote this morning and ratified an agreement with the company with 75 percent voting in favour.
"While there is large disappointment that the company would not offer
more, the members are relieved that there is now an agreement in place
for the next three years and that a strike has been averted," said CAW national representative, Todd Romanow.
The Kawneer Lethbridge facility is located approximately 250 km
southeast of Calgary. The facility manufactures aluminum architectural
products that include window systems, curtain walls, stock and custom
doors. Operations consist of a 2,500-ton extrusion press, anodizing,
electrostatic spray painting and fabrication. The plant began operations
in 1983, with Alcoa managing operations since 1998 as a result of the
Alumax merger.
