Apogee acquires Alumicor
Apogee Enterprises has announced it has acquired 100 per cent of the stock of Toronto-based Alumicor , which finishes and fabricates aluminum frames for window, storefront, entrance and curtainwall products for the Canadian commercial construction industry, for approximately $52 million from majority shareholder Fulcrum Capital Partners and six minority shareholders. Apogee provides distinctive value-added glass solutions for the architectural and picture framing industries.

Team Canada Skills Canada competition coming to Toronto
Skills Canada, a not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies, today announced that Canada's top skilled trade and technology students, along with government representatives, industry leaders, trainers and educators, will gather in Toronto at the International Centre from June 4 to 7, 2014, for the 20th annual Skills Canada National Competition.

Golden Gate IGMA releases Winter Conference details
The Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance has released details of its upcoming 2014 Winter Conference. The conference will take place March 3 to 7, 2014, in San Francisco, Calif. The opening activity is a night tour of Alcatraz. The Emerging Technology and Innovation Committee will meet at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on March 4, and the remainder the meetings are at the J.W. Marriott Union Square.

ICE Canadian companies fight back against unfair trade
There are 30 Chinese government programs providing subsidies to Chinese unitized curtain wall manufacturers, and another 142 that may be providing indirect or “upstream” aid, according to the Canada Border Services Agency. The assistance is in the form of direct grants, tax breaks, rebates, awards, passed-through price discounts and forgivable loans.
