Alison Redford’s Conservative government will “legalize fire traps” if it repeals safety rules that force landlords to put windows in bedrooms so tenants can escape during a fire, critics say. Proposed new rules leaked to the Edmonton Journal show the province may leave it up to landlords to decide whether to put in a window or not, even though eight Alberta renters have died in fires since 2005 because windows were too small, sealed shut or nonexistent.

CRL acquires Columbia
C.R. Laurence has announced that it acquired the assets of Columbia Manufacturing Company on Feb. 15. Columbia will now be operated through a new, wholly owned entity by C.R. Laurence.

Quebec private equity firm invests in Novatech
The Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec has announced a $16.7-million investment in Novatech Group, one of the largest Canadian manufacturers of glass doors. "Investing in Novatech, a Quebec manufacturing leader with 30 years under its belt, is another way for the Caisse to contribute to the success of a Quebec company," Normand Provost, the Caisse's executive vice-president of private equity and chief operations officer.

Smith Hypertherm promotes Smith
Hypertherm, a U.S. based manufacturer of advanced metal cutting systems, has announced that vice-president and general manager Evan Smith has assumed the role of president from Hypertherm founder and CEO Dick Couch. Couch will remain as CEO of Hypertherm and continue to chair Hypertherm’s board of directors.
