UL Canada hosts ribbon cutting ceremony for building envelope test lab

April 29, 2019 – UL opened the doors of the new building envelope test lab to members of the construction industry on April 11, 2019. Manufacturers, consultants, architects, owners, and industry stakeholders attended the Open House and were excited about the opportunity to install and test large envelope system mock-ups on a year round basis at the largest indoor facility in Canada. We were honored to have Toronto Deputy Mayor and City Councillor Michael Thompson in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony and to recognize the Ferguson Neudorf team as our first customer in this state-of-the-art test lab.

Located in Toronto, the new lab has been operational since November 2018 and serves the building envelope and building sciences market. The Toronto facility is one of the three UL Building Envelope test labs located in North America. For over 30 years UL has contributed to many high-caliber projects and has been delivering laboratory testing, field testing, forensic and commissioning services for architects, building owners, manufacturers and installers in the building construction markets across North America.

The Toronto testing facility can accommodate all forms of building envelope assemblies. The facility contains both a mock-up lab and a fenestration lab. The mock-up lab can test any full-scale wall assemblies, including window wall and curtain wall. It is located indoors in a 7200 square foot facility equipped with a 50 ton overhead crane and can test samples up to 37 feet in height – making it amongst the largest indoor facilities in Canada. The fenestration lab is equipped to test any sample size. Both labs are conveniently located at UL’s laboratory in Canada on Underwriters Rd. in Toronto.
