Last day to register for OGMA Fall Seminar

Nov. 7, 2014 – Today is the last day to register online for the Ontario Glass and Metal Association's Fall Seminar. Open
to members and non-members alike, glazing contractors in Ontario will
hear important information about the new OGMA/WSPS Safety Manual
containing critical information to help avoid trouble with Ontario's new
safety laws. Other seminar topics
include "Positioning glass and aluminum curtain wall systems for the
future," and
"Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the glazing industry."

Positioning glass and aluminum curtain wall systems for the future

The world we live in is becoming more
efficient and sustainable while encouraging healthier and better environments
for people to work and live, as such, the enclosures that wrap our buildings
are gaining much more attention than they did in the past. Building enclosures
developed in the 1960s were designed to be cost effective to construct, however
energy efficiency was not a primary concern. As the world continues to advance
into a healthier living concept, the latest design challenges speak more to the
manufacturing of the materials and to the operation of the buildings. Glass and aluminum wall systems met the
challenges of the past for fast and efficient methods to enclose a building,
but now they are being pushed harder to look at higher insulation values and
more durable and sustainable products. This presentation will look briefly
through the archives to assess where the glass and aluminum has come from,
where it is today, and where it will have to be positioned in the future. We
will discuss the problems and solutions related to the requirement for
increased thermal performance while still maintaining the efficiencies for
manufacturing. We look to bring ideas from design and manufacturing together to
keep glass and aluminum systems in the forefront of technology. 

Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the glazing industry

Jennifer Threndyle, Workplace Safety and
Prevention Services (WSPS) subject matter expert for accessibility for
th Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), will familiarize attendees with the
legislation pertaining to disabilities and the effect new laws will have on
glazing contractors and commercial entrance doors.

OGMA/WSPS Health and Safety Policy Manual

Charmine Mitchell with WSPS will be
introducing and unveiling the OGMA/WSPS Health and Safety Policy Manual. The
manual was created by qualified health and safety professionals and is a
timesaving tool enabling glass shops to establish their own company program.
Not only will this support a company's efforts to eliminate workplace injuries
and illnesses, it will also lower costs and time related to WSIB claims.
Additionally, the health and safety manual provides proof of compliance with
the new OHSA Regulation 297/13.
