The stock market and the housing index posted the largest gains, with
increases of 2.2 percent and 2 percent respectively. Furniture and appliance sales
increased 0.6 percent, while sales of other durable goods rose 0.3 percent.

The ratio of manufacturing shipments to inventories rose for the
second straight month, as shipments turned up while stocks fell. The
average workweek at factories rose for the third month in a row. New
orders for durable goods fell 0.6 percent, after a rebound in February.
