Managing the challenges of whole-building energy commissioning: tips from Anton Van Dyk at Top Glass West 2024

Anton Van Dyk of Layton Consulting, will be presenting Who Profits?: Lifting the burden of whole-building performance commissioning at Top Glass West 2024 this October.

The world of low-carbon building construction is moving inexorably toward whole-building performance commissioning where projects will be evaluated and approved based on their overall carbon impact rather than the cobbled-together operational and embodied contributions of their individual parts. This means that, before they even generate a quote, glazing contractors have significant work to do to verify their products’ performance in a particular building detail. Worse, changes made to any other part of the building could send the glazier back to the drawing board to make upgrades or downgrades to their product in midstream. Van Dyk has seen how this works to kick the can of performance verification down the chain to contractors and has some ideas for how this system could work better for all concerned.

Van Dyk is fenestration design consultant based in Langley, B.C. He’s been involved with building envelope engineering since 1999 at engineering firms and window manufacturers. Van Dyk has a certificate in architectural and building sciences technology from BCIT and writes the Window Geek column in Fenestration Review magazine.
