Terry Adamson, technical director, Fenestration Canada will be presenting Size Shouldn’t Matter, But It Does: New work to standardize thermal performance data for fenestration without defined assembly sizes, at Top Glass West 2024.

Establishing and certifying the thermal performance of a particular fenestration detail can be a thorn in the side of all concerned. Test data for units and mock-ups obtained at Model Size can be challenged when different sizes or designs are specified, necessitating new testing that adds cost and time to projects. Certified thermal results can be invalidated with size or design changes that can result in significantly different thermal performance. Industry stakeholders across the continent are looking at ways to model thermal performance across a range of detail sizes using software tools that can provide acceptable results for the specifiers. Fenestration Canada is part of those discussions. Adamson, will share with Top Glass West what to expect in the weeks and months ahead.

Adamson has spent 38 years in the fenestration industry. He is the epitome of an industry ladder climber. Beginning with Cascade Windows in Langley, B.C., in 1985, he loaded windows onto delivery trucks with an eye on a career and opportunity to advance. With a keen sense of detail, the technical aspects drew him to all facets of development and design with stops in logistics, production, purchasing, sales, then spending eleven years as general manager and 10 years as technical director for Westeck Windows just east of Vancouver.

He also served for 11 years with WDMA-BC/FenBC to June 2015, including two terms as president, then spent seven years on the board of Fenestration Canada, including one term as association president.  A vocal advocate for the industry; competitor, or ally, he sees all as colleagues in a challenging industry. In May of 2021, he joined Fenestration Canada as their on-staff technical director. Adamson appreciates the challenges facing manufacturers trying to work under confusing building codes and market conditions and is never reluctant to voice his opinion or listen to others in the hopes of finding solutions.
