Energy efficiency
The California Department of General Services announced California will be requesting Environmental Product Declarations from contractors on public works products starting Jan. 1 of this year. Flat glass is one of the building materials listed as a product eligible for an EPD. EPDs are third-party-verified documents quantifying the environmental impact of a product's materials and manufacturing process, including raw material extraction, energy use, chemical emissions and waste. The announcement constitutes the first inclusion of EPDs in official state procurement policy in North America, and will likely be watched closely by environmental regulators in other jurisdictions, including Canada.
Igloos made with electrically heated glass prevent condensation, ice, snow build-up and convection, offering an unobstructed view of nature and a unique opportunity to enjoy the starry sky and northern lights in comfort and peace.
Recent advances in fibreglass reinforced plastics (also known as FRP, fibreglass composite or simply fibreglass) and the pultrusion process that manufacture them have only recently opened the door to exciting new uses for this material in a variety of applications.
Oct. 23, 2018 - Finnglass offers a first-hand experience on the benefits of electrically heated glass at glasstech fair 2018. The company has made a cold wall simulator which allows to compare electrically heated glass with double and triple glazing. It demonstrates how electrically heated glass prevents convection and cold wall effect, hence giving a pleasant and comfortable indoor environment while saving money and energy.
Oct. 9, 2018 - Energy efficiency is hard to see, but we feel its benefits in our homes, neighbourhoods, environment, economy and wallets. Federal investments in innovative energy-efficient projects drive economic growth, contribute to our clean energy future and create new, middle-class jobs for Canadians.
July 9, 2018 - AGC (AGC Asahi Glass) has entered into a strategic development agreement with Ubiquitous Energy. The collaboration will focus on the development of Ubiquitous Energy’s transparent and neutral solar coating to create windows that produce electricity.
Oct. 12, 2017 - The pursuit of safer, more environmentally friendly roadways and sidewalks shifted into another gear with the first public installation of low-wattage, energy-producing tempered glass solar panels manufactured by Solar Roadways topped with low-iron Starphire glass by Vitro Architectural Glass.
June 15, 2017 - The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) recently released a new white paper created by the AAMA Aluminum Material Council that discusses the use of aluminum in high-performing building enclosures. AMC-2-26, "Aluminum in High-Performing Building Enclosures," is now available in the AAMA online store as a complimentary download.
With the recent publication of a Product Category Rule (PCR) for processed glass, the glass industry now has official PCRs for all architectural glass products: flat glass, processed glass and windows and doors. Future green building projects under LEED v.4 and beyond are going to require product lifecycle assessments for all building facade components.
There’s no glass and aluminum enclosure like it. “At least, no other frameless, retractable glass sunrooms, solariums and three-season rooms can rival us for style, appearance, functionality and user-friendliness,” says John Van Iperen, sales manager for Lumon Canada. “Our quality and continuous product development have really paid off.”
April 21, 2016 - Modern, transparent and prestigious – large glass façades are very much in vogue for office complexes and industrial buildings. Yet their use only makes sense in terms of energy savings and cost effectiveness if they also have air-conditioning functions and help the energy supply. The glass industry is therefore keen to promote the development of multifunctional windows and façade elements – an area where it has already achieved numerous promising innovations.
Jan. 14, 2016 - High costs, a lack of integration possibilities and interest on the part of architects – solar modules for building skin integration are still niche products. But this could soon change. Thanks to more efficient solar cells and new dimensions, shapes and transparency levels, modules are becoming cheaper and more versatile. This might make them a standard feature in new buildings.
Dec. 16, 2015 - A recording of the Glass Canada Winter Webinar "Energy code implications for spandrel design: Quantifying and mitigating the effects of thermal bridging" with Stephane Hoffman of Morrison Hershfield is now available online. Hoffman's Dec. 14 presentation educated Glass Canada readers on his latest research into thermal bridging in spandrel assemblies and addressed several challenges in meeting today's tough standards for energy efficiency in building envelope construction. In the presentation, Hoffman took several questions from the online audience.
