If you walk through the recently opened Brooklin high school in Whitby, Ont., one of the first things you may notice is its open and light-filled interior. The 173,200-square foot facility includes extensive glazing throughout to provide natural light and visibility for students and staff. What you may not realize is that a significant portion of the glass used to illuminate the school also provides protection against the spread of flames and smoke. In fact, its clear form is hardly distinguishable from its non-fire-rated glass counterparts. This is a credit to recent manufacturing advances.
Nov. 3, 2016 - Edmonton based Step Ahead Properties Ltd. gathered with Ladacor Advanced Modular Systems at thei rWestgate Manor site in Glenwood to launch construction of an exciting new affordable housing development, which will see the infill addition to the property of 20 units of purpose-built affordable rental housing.
Walking into Steinway Hall is like entering a gallery where the world’s finest pianos sit on display as exhibitions of art....and Steinway agrees. The company touts each piano as a “masterpiece of craftsmanship and a consummate work of art. The STEINWAY piano exists to remove all barriers between the listener and the pure, uncompromised expression of the artist.” The same can be said for their New York City storefront, an M. Cohen & Sons project. Consisting of 23 glass lites, each over 100 sq. feet, the all-glass façade removes all visual barriers for the exterior foot traffic and allows the ‘uprights’ and the ‘grands’ to shine on display.
Sept. 22, 2016 - The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is putting the finishing touches on a major retrofit, featuring a new Lamberts channel glass façade by Bendheim Wall Systems Inc. The vibrant, ceramic-fritted glass units rise along the building’s 10 stories and a 2-story-tall ‘lantern’ cupola. The striking colors of the glass are visible from a distance in the day or night, while the smart technical design of the system makes this project truly stand out by answering a number of unique design challenges. It is the first and only installation of vertically-unitized, multi-colored ceramic-fritted channel glass in North America.
Glasshaus Living, a Woodbridge, Ont.-based custom fenestration fabricator, will display its novel shipping container shelters at a pop-up marketing event in a wooded area near the Old Mill in a swanky part of Toronto. On display will be Glasshau's portable shipping container shelter that displays its unique window and door designs, and another shipping container shelter designed by Glasshaus that is used by Needs and Wants, a Canadian clothing designer, as a store.
June 30, 2016 - The Strasbourg Cathedral, whose cornerstone was laid in 1015 and completed in 1439, has been standing proud and tall for a thousand years; but since 1683, it was missing a large part of its stained glass artwork. That is until September 2015, when the clear glass panels were refurbished and replaced by stunning, digitally printed glass.
Coast to coast, Canadian glaziers and glass fabricators continue to revolutionize the urban environment with incredible achievements in architecture. Here are six projects that caught our eye.
Living in a steel box might sound Houdiniesque, but crafting a home out of a shipping container can be an escape from the ordinary. “There’s nothing odd about it,” says Christoph Kesting, a Waterloo, Ont.,-based advocate for social justice housing, who believes it’s possible to never buy anything new. “Whatever you want, you can find a used item somewhere. For those thinking environmentally, why not incorporate it into your house? All you need to do is buy a shipping container or three.”
Oct. 22, 2015 - The Centre for Food (CFF) at Durham College (DC) distinguishes itself in the highly competitive field of culinary education by bringing together culinary, hospitality, event management, food science, and agricultural and horticultural programs in a state-of-the-art facility for “field-to-fork” culinary education.
Specifying glass using good, better or best options is a basic concept that can be instrumental in the selection and design process. Various considerations for your glass selections will include safety, energy, loads, and security for a basic system, and can be improved with specialty high performance products to address sound, glare, aesthetics, and performance concerns. These value-added products will differentiate your project to exceed common expectations and would be better/best options.
