As worldwide energy efficiency standards become increasingly stringent for window manufacturers, many will turn to producing triple-glazed units to meet the new requirements. When properly made, triples provide improved energy efficiency over double-paned units. However, production can often be problematic because of the difficulty achieving the proper temperatures in oven roll presses to provide a consistent seal to the centre lite. To simplify production of triples, Edgetech I.G. offers the Super Spacer Cushion Edge spacer system, which, like all Super Spacer products, eliminates the need for oven roll presses.
“When you use oven roll presses to produce triples you risk under-heating the center-lite seal, which can lead to premature seal failure in the unit,” says Larry Johnson, executive vice president of Edgetech I.G. “Super Spacer Cushion Edge features desiccant-filled, pre-applied side and channel adhesives, eliminating the need to apply sealant into two cavities and dramatically reducing the likelihood of seal failures.”
Super Spacer Cushion Edge is a flexible, U-shaped silicone foam spacer system that features a multi-layer vapor barrier backing and dual seal design for enhanced thermal performance and improved argon gas retention in triple-glazed IG units. With chamfered corners for increased sealant depth, Cushion Edge must be used in combination with conventional IG sealants, including hot melt butyl, polyurethane and solvent-free polysulfide.
Cushion Edge also provides a pleasing aesthetic appearance and improved productivity. The pre-applied U-channel assembly provides fast wrap-around, simplified production of shaped units, elimination of desiccant filling and corner key assembly for high-volume production with a small labour force.
