Quebec construction workers on strike

May 24, 2017 – Around 175,000 construction workers in Quebec went on strike this morning following a breakdown in talks with the provincial government. Union statements pointed to job security and working hours as main sticking points.

The government is said to be considering back-to-work legislation, saying the work stoppages could cost the province $45 million per day.

“This labour dispute is all the more significant because our brothers and sisters in the construction industry are fighting for the middle class as a whole,” explained François Laporte, president of Teamsters Canada, in a release. “Deteriorating working conditions in this industry could have repercussions on all workers in Québec. This is why we must remain united, committed and steadfast for as long as it takes.”
