Ray Wakefield honoured with OGMA Lifetime Achievement Award

June 20, 2013 – The Ontario Glass and Metal Association
gave its Lifetime Achievement Award to Ray Wakefield, technical
services manager for Trulite, at its spring golf tournament on May 30.
The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions
to the Ontario glazing industry.

June 20, 2013 – The Ontario Glass and Metal Association gave its Lifetime Achievement Award to Ray Wakefield, technical services manager for Trulite, at its spring golf tournament on May 30. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Ontario glazing industry.

Wakefield has been in the glass industry since 1977, starting his career at Armalux Glass Industries as a sales representative and moving to Trulite in 1983 as architectural glass manager. Projects he has worked on include the National Gallery in Ottawa, the Skydome (now Rogers Centre), the Palace Pier condominiums, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board building, the Chrysler Bramalea assembly plant, PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh, W Hotel in Boston and the Art Gallery of Ontario. In the early 1990s, Wakefield initiated Trulite's sales campaign in Asia, making six trips to China, Japan, Taiwan, Brunei and Hong Kong, landing several projects in those countries.

Wakefield has also logged an impressive record of involvement in industry associations. He was a director and president of the Insulating Glass Manufacturer's Association of Canada between 1991 and 2000 and oversaw that association's merger with the Sealed Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association. He then held a variety of executive positions, including president, of the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance between 2006 and the present. He is a member of the ASTM International E06 Performance of Buildings task groups 2200.05 Sealed Insulating Glass and 2200.07 Chromagenic Glazings. He is the chairperson of the Canadian General Standards Board Can12.8 committee for insulating glass. Wakefield also chairs the ISO TC160 SCWG 4 Insulating Glass Canadian Advisory Committee. He was president and governor of the Insulating Glass Certification Council from 2007 to 2011. Wakefield is a member of the Canadian Standards Association's joint A440-11 group developing the North American Fenestration Standard for windows, doors and skylights, and also a member of Construction Specifications Canada and the Canadian Professional Sales Association. In 2003, Wakefield represented Canada as head of its delegation to the ISO technical meetings in Tampere, Finland. In 2010 he represented the IGMA in presenting a one-day seminar on good glazing practices to IGMA Australia and the Australian Glass and Glazing Association in Sydney. He has been given Fenestration Canada's Pioneers designation and an honourary lifetime membership in the IGMA.
  
"Ray has always been a supporter of the OGMA," Steve Ringler, OGMA president, said. "He has made a career out of the glass industry and has been part of many other associations within the glass industry. He is well-liked among his peers and the glazing industry, and has always been a friendly, reachable person."
