Ontario glazing systems specifications initiative on track

A joint Ontario industry initiative to put in place a Glazing Specifications Systems Manual for use in Ontario is well underway. The Ontario initiative will mirror similar guides now in use in British Columbia and Alberta.

The Glazing Contractors Association (GCA) of British Columbia has invested much money and volunteer time instituting such a manual for its province. Shortly after, Alberta contractors signed an agreement to adopt the British Columbia document and adjust it to the Alberta glazing market.

Three industry associations based in Ontario recognized what the value of a similar effort would be for Ontario and subsequently teamed up early in 2006 to begin the initiative. The Architectural Glass and Metal Contractors Association (AGMCA), the Ontario Glass and Metal Association (OGMA) and the National Capital Glass Association (NCGA) all committed volunteer time and funds toward the project.

Qualified volunteers from the industry were identified to guide the project and one of the most respected industry consultants, John Mastrofini, P.Eng., was contracted to assist in the review of the British Columbia and Alberta versions to help identify areas requiring adjustments to suit the Ontario building landscape. Those connected to the project also looked at additional areas that needed consideration and attention.

The manual will be directed to several audiences. To architects and specifiers, it is offered as an aid in understanding and specifying the kinds of products supplied and installed by Ontario contractors who may be principally engaged in serving a part of this market. It will serve as a reference guide to issues that affect their suppliers or customers. In general, it will provide an overview of the issues that affect the architectural aluminum and glass product industries in Ontario. It will include a number of specific sections for entrances, storefronts and curtainwall; roof windows and skylights; structural glazing, special applications; glazing and a guide to sealants and joints specific to architectural glazing.

The Ontario committee will have the first draft completed in the spring of this year with the hopes of having a print ready manual in the late fall of 2007. -end-

Stephen Hargrove

PGAA and GAMA
Stephen Hargrove is the new Canadian Glass Association (CGA) director representing the Provincial Glaziers Association of Alberta (PGAA) and the Glass and Architectural Metal Association (GAMA).
Hargrove is an active member in both associations and he is the president and co-owner of Wescom Glass and Aluminum in Calgary, Alberta. He has been in the glass and aluminum industry for 30 years and also served as president for GAMA in 1998, as well as president of the PGAA in 2004. -end-

GTA
The Glass Trades Association (GTA) of Northern Alberta has launched a web site to promote the interests of the glass industry.

The site has a clean and crisp design that is very user friendly with information about the association’s members, events, its code of ethics and industry news, as well as links to other Canadian glass associations and learning resources. -end-

Peter Fridgen

NCGA
The National Capital Glass Association (NCGA) reports that Peter Fridgen is its new president. Fridgen is the president of Fridgen Fenestration, a distributor for Oldcastle Glass and Eastern Float Glass, located in Ottawa, Ontario. He served with the NCGA as a board director for five years before being appointed to president to replace Richard Verdon who will now serve as past-president.

Fridgen says the association will maintain its social program with its popular golf tournament and dinner taking place in August. -end-
