This has been a busy time for the Canadian Glass Association. We are currently working on changing our bylaws to comply with the new federal Not for Profit Act. During this time we are able to revisit our purposes and ensure we are in tune with the needs of our industry.
Our next annual general meeting is May 2012. We are working to nail down the exact date – check in at www.canadianglassassociation.com for updates.
Our Technical Committee chairperson, Leonard Pianalto, is a member of the steering committee to review the Energy Rating System and the Energy Efficient Fenestration Steering Committee. More information on these committees will be available soon.
We are researching costs for translating the Glazing Systems Specifications Manual to French.
We have tentative plans to hold Glass Connections in Montreal in May 2013 and will have more announcements about this program very soon.

This directory is a great resource for anyone wanting to find contact information for their fellow members, or to find a local member to help your business. David Langton, CGA president, gives an overview of where the association is today and an update on the new associations joining our group.

Glazing Contractors Association of British Columbia
GCABC has officially opened its apprentice school in Langley, B.C., with its first Level 1 class. This six-week course will be followed by a Level 2 and then another Level 1, working towards a Level 3 course in September.
The GCABC is still working closely with the Ministry of Energy in B.C. with regards to the Energy Efficiency Act and how it affects glazing contractors, architects and owners. Proposed laws similar to this one are spreading across Canada and we predict most provinces will have one in the foreseeable future.
The GCABC this year introduced a Member in Good Standing stamp that can be inserted into submitted shop drawings so architects and engineers can see that a contractor is in fact a member in good standing of the association. As more members use the stamp, more professionals will get used to seeing it. When they don’t, they may ask why.
Our Technical Committee is actively working on numerous projects under the chairmanship of Harold Louwerse of Morrison Hershfield. We have a Commercial Glazing Task Group made up of various players, including the B.C. Ministry of Energy, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists, the Architectural Institute of B.C., and the British Columbia Institute of Technology, to come up with a model specification for the Energy Efficiency Act so all players understand what can and cannot be used. We are also starting to review the B.C. side of the glazing manual for updates. We have a new B.C. building code due out in mid-2012 and we are making sure we are consistent with the known changes.
Our annual golf tournament this year is May 17 at Northview Golf Course in Surrey. We hope to get a great turnout again this year.

Ontario Glass and Metal Association
On Jan. 14, the OGMA held a road trip to Detroit for an afternoon hockey game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks. Everybody that attended had a fabulous time, but the turnout from the industry was so dismal that this will likely be the last event of its type.
The OGMA is pleased to put on an exciting and fun night of horse racing again this spring. The event will be held at the Woodbine Racetrack in the Post Parade restaurant on April 12 at 6:10 p.m.
The OGMA invites you to our Spring Seminar, “Re-cladding of the First Canadian Place Tower.”
Halsall Associates and Ellis Don will be presenting an interesting and informative seminar on the challenges of re-cladding this large and complex structure. It will be held at Tremco’s head office meeting hall on April 26. Check www.ogma.ca for the time.
