Viracon to reduce frequency of coating runs
Written by Viracon
August 15, 2011 - As architectural requirements for energy efficient glazing continue to grow and evolve, Viracon is refining its product offering.  In order to increase the pace of new coatings development, the company is decreasing the frequency of its least requested current coating runs.

“Viracon is known for offering the widest range of choices for architects and that will still clearly be the case,” says Kelly Schuller, senior vice president, sales and marketing. “However, 95 percent of our production is concentrated on a reasonably short list of coatings.  The remainder, a large number of primarily older reflective coatings, requires a disproportionate amount of our coating capacity.  While we will continue to support replacements for any Viracon-originated coating over our 40 plus year history, our oldest coatings will only be available at predefined times during the year.  This will free up more coating capacity for new product development.”

Viracon’s most popular coatings such as the VUE, VE, VRE, and VNE coating lines will continue to run on a weekly basis.  Effective January 1, 2012 the company’s less requested coatings will begin running on a quarterly or annual basis.   A comprehensive list of coating availability is available on Viracon’s website at www.viracon.com.

In addition to changing the frequency of some Viracon coating runs, the company will also discontinue its Guardian replacement glass coatings program.  The company will make a final run of the Guardian replacement coatings in the fourth quarter of 2011 to address any remaining customer needs.

“Over the past decade, Viracon has led the industry in developing some of the highest-performing coatings in the market.  The research and development team here has not only created dozens of new coatings, but they’ve actually created new categories of coatings, including radiant Low-E (VRE) and VUE, an exciting new line of high performance coatings.  These changes to the production schedule will allow us to continue pushing the coating envelope to create new and exciting solutions in high-performance glazing,” adds Schuller.

Customers that award Viracon a project by September 1, 2011 using the limited run coatings will not be affected by the change.  Viracon’s sales teams have been directly contacting all customers that may be impacted by the change to discuss project schedules and Viracon’s continued commitment to their projects.  Customers are also encouraged to call the Viracon sales teams with any questions.
