Will the highways of the future be coated in glass?
Oct. 13, 2010 – The Solar Roadways project is working to pave driveways, parking lots and even highways with solar panels you can drive on.

The first prototype, a 12-ft by 12-ft road panel, has been already completed. Since the cost of the custom hardened glass with embedded heating element exceeded what Phase I funding could support, Solar Roadways will wait until Phase II to order the glass to be used for the surface. For the current prototype, polycarbonate was used in place of the glass.
