EcoEnergy reaches 250,000 homes, shuts down early
Jan. 30, 2012 - Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver closed the popular EcoEnergy Retrofit - Homes program to any new registrants on Jan. 29, saying it had reached its goal of 250,000 registered homeowners. The sudden closing of the program comes two months before its official end date on March 31, 2012.


ALI releases updated A14.7 standard for mobile ladders
Jan. 27, 2012 – The American Ladder Institute, the national trade association representing the North American ladder industry, has released the updated A14.7 standard, which provides technical specifications for mobile ladder stands and mobile ladder stand platforms. The standard prescribes rules for mobile ladders, also referred to as rolling ladders, which are primarily used in the workplace and are generally purchased to perform a specific task.


CSC to present economic forecaster Alex Carrick
alex-final_9-11Jan. 26, 2012 - The Toronto chapter of Construction Specifications Canada will host a dinner meeting on Feb. 7 featuring an economic forecast on the construction industry by Reed Construction Data chief economist, Alex Carrick. The meeting will take place at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club. Non-members may attend for $50.


U.K. company cancels contract with ThinkGlass over Kyoto

A U.K.-based company is refusing to buy products from Canada following the Conservative government's decision to formally withdraw from the Kyoto accord. The Glass Factory recently cancelled its contract with ThinkGlass, a company based in Boisbriand, Que.

Quanex hires Gnos as business development manager
Jan. 24, 2012 - Quanex Building Products, a company specializing in components and systems that produce innovative and energy-efficient window and door products, announced that Reed P. Gnos will be joining the team as a business development manager. In his new role, Reed Gnos will be responsible for sales and product/business development for the specialty components market (non-fenestration accounts) in North America. This role will include expanding and diversifying Quanex’s core competencies into new markets and adding new customers throughout North America.


Dollar drops, commodity prices retreat
Jan. 23, 2012 - The Canadian dollar closed lower as data showed a sharp drop in inflation during December while prices for oil and metals backed off. The loonie was down 0.17 of a cent to 98.7 cents U.S. after inflation fell 0.6 per cent from November to an annualized rate of just 2.3 per cent.

Improving U.S. economy starting to help exporters
Jan. 17, 2012 - Improving economic conditions south of the border helped Canada return to a robust trade surplus in November, as exports in the auto and energy sectors rebounded strongly from the previous month. Canada's $1.1-billion trade surplus in November - twice as big as expected - contrasted with October's upwardly revised $487-million deficit.


Hypertherm to offer online training
Jan. 16, 2012 — Hypertherm, a U.S. based manufacturer of advanced metal cutting systems, has announced the launch of the new Hypertherm Cutting Institute, an online training community that offers a number of resources for people who work with or want to learn more about cutting metal.


Grey Mountain gobbling up glass companies
Jan. 13, 2012 - Grey Mountain Partners, a Colorado-based investment firm, has announced four acquisitions of glass and glazing products manufacturers in the U.S. since the start of the year.
